Where did Arizona Diamondbacks get their name? ›

First prize was a pair of lifetime season tickets awarded to the person who submitted the winning entry. The winning choice was "Diamondbacks", after the Western diamondback, a rattlesnake native to the region known for injecting a large amount of venom when it strikes.

The Diamondbacks were founded in 1998 as an expansion franchise, along with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays (now known as the Tampa Bay Rays). In their first season the Diamondbacks unsurprisingly finished last in their division.
