Litter-Robot does not require special bags or liners for the waste drawer, but clear bags work best. Customers often use 10- to 13-gallon clear kitchen garbage bags or large clear plastic grocery bags. Please note that waste level readings may be inaccurate when using a dark bag, especially when the drawer is empty.

We suggest using the Litter-Robot Waste Drawer Liners or any standard-size kitchen trash bag.

Avoid putting a plastic bag at the bottom of your litter box. While this is very convenient for the human cleaning it, it is less convenient for the cat, which doesn't like the feeling of his claws getting caught in the bag when scratching his litter box to bury his waste.

For one average-sized cat, you'll need to empty the waste drawer about once per week, and for two cats, twice every 7-10 days is typical. To change the drawer liner in Litter-Robot 3 (with or without Connect), simply pull out the drawer, unhook the edges of the liner, and dispose.

What Type of Litter is Best for a Self-Cleaning Litter Box. The best type of litter you can use for an automatic litter box is clumping cat litter. Clumping litter creates tight clusters out of your cat's waste, allowing the automatic litter box to sift the waste from clean litter.

Scooping out clumps of urine and feces is something done regularly, every other day at minimum, but often daily or even twice daily if you have a cat in a small apartment and want to keep litter box smell under control.

Most cats and humans prefer a clumping cat litter. Humans like it because the urine clumps into scoopable masses that they can remove easily when cleaning. Cats like it because no urine or strong odor is left behind after scooping.

The question of whether or not to use litter box liners is mostly a personal choice. Using liners may help keep the litter box sanitary and clean. We line our litter boxes and are big proponents of using them. However, we have subscribers who use them and subscribers who don't use them.

Litter-Robot 4 features an enlarged waste drawer, so you may only need to empty the waste drawer once every two weeks per one cat. With Litter-Robot 3, once every 10-12 days per one cat is usually sufficient; two cats, twice per week; three cats, every other day, and so on.

How often should I completely change my cat's litter? ›

Dr. Elsey's recommends completely changing the litter in your box every 4 weeks if you are using a clumping clay litter. Be sure to remove the clumps daily and top off with fresh litter to maintain a three-inch level. For non-clumping litter, we recommend changing the litter box every 7-10 days.

The unit will cycle two additional times before it will no longer automatically cycle. If your unit displays a flashing blue light bar, this indicates that the waste drawer needs to be emptied. Emptying the waste drawer when indicated is important to ensure that your Litter-Robot continues to cycle automatically.

Never submerge, spray, or soak the base or control panel. The base and control panel contains sensors and electronics. Wipe the surfaces of the base with a cloth dampened with a disinfectant. If using a spray, spray away from the base directly onto a cloth or paper towel so disinfectant does not get on the electronics.
